This program is designed for individuals interested in entering the field of Emergency Management Planning and Homeland Security and additionally for those currently in an emergency response profession seeking to update or broaden their skills. The Associate of Applied Science degree and certificate will prepare students for decision making, problem solving, and skills to plan, implement, and coordinate resources necessary for preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery from disasters. A number of the courses are pre-approved equivalents to courses offered by the Texas Department of Emergency Management and the Federal Management Agency
Growth Potential
The emergency management/homeland security career field is predicted to grow faster than average in the coming years. The predicted growth nationwide is 9%, and the predicted growth for Texas is 27.98% for the years 2002-2012. Entry-level salaries for graduates receiving the AAS degree are approximately $44,000 to $50,000 per year.*
Homeland security is a dynamic and diverse career field. Like security threats themselves, the work required to protect the nation is constantly changing. People who work in homeland security anticipate, prepare for, prevent, and react to everything from pandemics to hurricanes to terrorism. These workers help to reduce our nation's vulnerabilities and to minimize the damage from catastrophic events.
Homeland security work is available in the air, on land, and at sea. There are jobs in every state, in the District of Columbia, and abroad. Many homeland security jobs are with state, federal, or local governments, but there are also opportunities in private companies and nonprofit organizations.
