This is a sample speech using Monroe's Motivated Sequence
I
Attention
A.
Attention Getter: Adrian was a smoker for more than 30 years and
had his entire tongue removed through surgery in March 2007 due
to mouth cancer. The tongue was replaced by a flap of skin and muscle
from his stomach but he has been unable to eat or drink anything
since his operation and He only has six months to live according
to a press release by the New Zealand government on June 02, 2008.
Adrian bravely shares his story to the world in hopes that he can
prevent others from smoking.
B.
Topic: Today I am going to persuade you not to smoke.
C.
Even if you do not currently smoke, smoking is the single most preventable
cause of death and disease. Cigarettes cause more deaths than cocaine,
auto accidents, AIDS, alcohol, heroin, fire, suicide and homicide
combined, according to anti-smoking.org updated daily. We all have
an obligation to inform those we know and love what they are doing
to their bodies and ours.
D.
To fully understand the problems with smoking we will first look
at why we need to stop smoking, how to satisfy this need, and then
visualize a world without smoking and finally taking action to end
smoking.
II
Need
Smoking targets teens-In
most cases, the decision to smoke is not made by adults. Sixty percent
of smokers start by the age of 14, and 90% of smokers are firmly
addicted before reaching age 19. Stated another way, only one in
ten smokers become addicted after the age of 19. So, almost no one
starts smoking after age 19. According to http://www.anti-smoking.org/
. This means that the companies are still selling and
advertising to those they are not suppose to advertise to.
Smoking causes health
problems-According to kidshealth.org updated daily, Almost everyone
knows that smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and heart disease;
that it can shorten your life by 10 years or more; and that the
habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year.
Second hand smoke
is an issue-According to the Mayo Clinic online updated daily, The
Surgeon General reported in 2006 that scientific evidence shows
there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
III
Satisfaction
Don't start smoking
Talk to you kids about
smoking
Restaurants and Bars
can ban smoking
More money can be
spent on anti-smoking campaigns
IV
Visualization
Imagine going into
your favorite club and being able to breathe in the perfume of the
person you are dancing with and not smoke from the bar. You are
able to see the dance floor because there is not the blue haze of
second hand smoke in the air. Even though you have been dancing
all night you are able to breathe because you are not coughing from
all of the cigarette smoke. You leave the club and you are not allergic
to your hair or clothes because they do not carry that stale cigarette
smell.
This could be you
in a nice environment where no ones lungs are violated by smoke
when people are just trying to have a good time.
V
Action
A.
Start supporting organizations that are trying to end smoking. In
its June 27 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC summarized
data from its most recent Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which found
that cigarette use among teens was consistent between 2003 and 2007,
according to Fox News, June 30, 2008. However that means that cigarette
companies are putting more and more money to get their numbers back
up. We have to fight them using anti smoking organizations.
B.
Support Smoking bans in public places. M ore
than two billion fewer cigarettes were smoked and 400,000 people
quit the habit since the ban was introduced a year ago, (in England)
which researchers say will prevent 40,000 deaths over the next 10
years, according to Jeremy Laurance, Health Editor of The Independent.
Many cities in the US are trying to follow their lead. A co-alition
that includes the American Heart Association and the American Cancer
Society will seek to have bars included in a ban (in Dallas Texas
). A poll it sponsored showed that more than 70-percent of Dallas
voters would support an overall public smoking ban, according to
the article Anti-Smoking Coalition To Push For Comprehensive
Smoking Ban in Dallas Jun 30, 2008. Start and
support campaigns that prevent smoking in public places.
C.
Don't Smoke and stop if you do. Even though it can be hard you will
be makin gyouself an dyour world healthier.
