American Literature I


Course Description: A survey of American literature from selected Pre-Colonial
and Colonial literature to selected major writers of the American Renaissance period. Although careful attention is given to the historical, social, and intellectual developments that gave rise to the literature, the emphasis of the course is on
the individual selections themselves as outstanding expressions of our American literary heritage. The course employs critical reading, thinking, and writing skills in the analysis of a wide variety of selected readings. Prerequisites: ENGL 1301 and
1302, or equivalent, with a grade of “C” or above.
