Course
Description: A survey of American literature
from selected Pre-Colonial
and Colonial literature to selected major writers
of the American Renaissance period. Although careful
attention is given to the historical, social, and
intellectual developments that gave rise to the literature,
the emphasis of the course is on
the individual selections themselves as outstanding
expressions of our American literary heritage. The
course employs critical reading, thinking, and writing
skills in the analysis of a wide variety of selected
readings. Prerequisites: ENGL 1301 and
1302, or equivalent, with a grade of “C”
or above.
