Mr. Schroeder graduated with a BS Ed. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981 without having to take a single computer class. After fulfilling his 4-year Army ROTC scholarship commitment, he began teaching for CTC in the fall of 1985. That is when he began to take all the CTC and ATU/UCT computer science classes that he could find time for.
He took his first computer programming class during the summer of 1984 and it has been his preference ever since. He set up PLL and TAMMS computer programs in basic for his unit in 1984 that was used as a prototype for the development of the new systems that were to be used Army-wide. He also set up an arms room inventory, NBC room inventory, and key control programs with scheduled maintenance and expiration date warnings.
His first computer was a Vic-20 with a cassette tape backup that he purchased during the summer of 1984. He soon followed it up by a second so he could have one at work and one at home to double his computing ability. That fall, he purchased a Sharp PC-1500 for its portability. Next, he bought a Commodore-64 with a 5¼ diskette backup, RGB monitor, and a printer for Christmas followed by his second C-64 in the spring--again, one for work and one for home. As he was getting out of the military in May 1985, he took a giant step and spent the "really big bucks" and bought the powerful and mighty TRS-80.
When asked, "What about the IT field made it the field you wanted to pursue as a profession?", he answered, "The power I felt by getting a multi-million dollar mainframe computer to do exactly what I wanted it to do by inputting a program that I wrote."
He decided to teach for the reward he gets when he sees the sparkle in the eyes of students when they finally "get it".
