CTC
students among first graduates in Iraq
Camp
Victory, located in Baghdad, Iraq, was the site of the first
graduation ceremony for soldiers deployed to the Middle
East. The graduating class consisted of 79 service members
from 21 different schools with the majority of graduates
(26) from Central Texas College (CTC). The ceremony took
place in the Al Faw Palace and commencement speaker was
Major General Guy Swan III, chief of staff multi-national
forces – Iraq. On hand to confer the CTC degrees were Gary
Kindred, dean of CTC's Europe Campus, and Jim Yeonopolus,
deputy chancellor – international campus operations.
The
first student to walk across the stage to receive their
degree was Petty Officer Second Class Orlando Cepeda – a
CTC graduate who received an associate's degree in general
studies. “ Iraq is a historical place and even to be a part
of its history is awesome,” he said.
"We
are in Iraq and we graduated," said Sgt. 1st Class
Jennie Jones. "So, it's possible for other soldiers
to do it. There's always something to learn." Jones
also received an associate's degree in general studies from
CTC.
