What is Institutional Effectiveness (IE)?
Institutional Effectiveness (IE) has been identified by IE pioneer Peter Ewell (1985) as "A comparison of results achieved to goals intended." Many things in the IE community have changed and evolved since then, but this remains a good capsule summary of the heart of IE.
IE is a broad, overarching category that includes institutional research (IR), planning, evaluation, and policy analysis. The IE office does not equal IE. The office oversees the IE process, but IE is in fact part of the job of every CTC employee! There are three critical questions that each department must address:
- What is our function?
- How well are we performing?
- What can we do to improve?
What is Institutional Research (IR)?
Institutional Research (IR) encompasses a wide variety of activities. IR is research ABOUT the institution, by the institution.
