The computer’s screen, also known as the desktop, is not meant for permanent file storage. The files that automatically appear on the desktop (My Documents, My Computer, Recycle Bin, etc.) are actually shortcuts to the files located on your computer’s hard drive. Files associated with the desktop, i.e. which appear on the computer’s screen, are stored in the operating system’s Windows folder. Storing too many files on the desktop can cause your computer to perform erratically.First, the computer’s speed will decrease because it has to search through the many files in the folder to perform the simplest operation. Second, files stored on the desktop can be vulnerable to accidental deletion or modification. An important file could inadvertently be deleted when you are cleaning up the desktop because it cannot be distinguished from the other files saved on the desktop. Finally, co-workers cannot access files saved to the desktop because they have not been given permission to access the Windows folder. For areas that require file sharing, this can lead to work delays and frustration among co-workers. To prevent these problems, create shortcuts to the files and place them on your desktop. Store the actual file in the “My Documents” folder. Click here if you have questions about creating shortcuts.
