RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. It is used to publish frequently updated digital content such as news or podcasts. RSS feeds provide a convenient way to group information from a variety of sources, including news stories and updates from Web sites.
RSS feeds use the XML format to deliver information to a news aggregator. A news aggregator is a program that uses a Web feed to retrieve syndicated Web content at intervals determined by the user.
A user can subscribe to a feed from a Web site by supplying their news aggregator a link to the Web site’s feed. Internet Explorer 7.0 allows users to set up subscriptions to RSS Feeds thus reducing time and effort used checking Web sites. The aggregator will check the users subscribed feeds at the determined intervals for new content. If new content is available, the news aggregator retrieves the feed in an XML feed and posts the file to the user’s desktop or Web browser.
