Spam is unsolicited junk mail sent by advertising companies to promote their products. Advertising companies use enormous mailing lists or newsgroups to send their solicitations to thousands of email users. Spammers get email addresses from newsletters or newsgroups, public internet sites, and sometimes they guess at common email addresses. Another way spammers acquire email addresses is by users posting their email addresses on public Web pages, chat rooms, or any type of public access site. You can fight spam by not posting your CTC email address in public sites, not using CTC computers to visit chat rooms during work hours, and reporting all instances of spam to www.postini.com (see the Tech Tip about forwarding spam to Postini).
Here are some tips for dealing with spam:
Do not open spam. Many threats are delivered through spam.
Never open an unexpected attachment. If you do, a malicious program almost certainly will attack your computer. Even if it comes from a person you know, check first. Other people’s addresses are easy to steal and use as return addresses (see above).
Do not respond to unsolicited offers on the Internet.
