Hard drives become cluttered from the day-to-day use of creating and deleting files and using the Internet. After time, these old files can slow down the performance of your computer by causing gaps between files. Cleaning out your old files on a weekly basis is a good habit to develop to maintain your computer’s performance.
Disk Cleanup is a utility that analyzes your hard drive, compresses files, and deletes files that you chose to be deleted. Disk Cleanup deletes temporary Internet files, the Recycle Bin, Internet programs, and old Windows files. Other options include removing unused Windows components or installed programs.
To use Disk Cleanup:
Click Start and click All Programs.
- Open Accessories and click System Tools (see Figure 1).

Click Disk Cleanup.
- After Disk Cleanup compresses your old files, a list of files to delete will appear (see Figure 2).

- Select the files you want to delete and click Ok (see Figure 3).

- After Disk Cleanup finishes deleting your files, click Yes.
