Defragging the hard drive moves files together that have been divided into pieces on the hard drive. According to webopedia.com, “Fragmentation occurs naturally when you use a disk frequently, creating, deleting, and modifying files. At some point, the operating system needs to store parts of a file in noncontiguous (separated) clusters. This is entirely invisible to users, but it can slow down the speed at which data is accessed because the disk drive must search through different parts of the disk to put together a single file.” (www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/fragmentation.html)
To defrag your hard drive:
Click on the START button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
Select PROGRAMS.
Select Executive Software Diskeeper on the drop-down menu.
Click “Defragment” in the Diskeeper dialogue box.
- When Diskeeper finishes defragging, Click “Close”.
