New Staff - November 26, 2007

The IT Division recently hired Janie Gallups as Switchboard Operator.  Janie has worked for the Division as temporary replacement for Michelle Williams while Michelle was on maternity leave.  Janie brings many years of customer service experience to the switchboard.

Staff Departure - November 26, 2007

Michelle Williams, IT Help Desk Technician, recently resigned her post with the CTC I T Division.  Michelle began working at the Division in July 2006.  During her time with us, Michelle earned her AAS in Networking and gave birth to a baby girl, Violet.  Michelle has decided to become a stay at home mom and earn a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Tarleton State University – Central Texas.  Good luck, Michelle.

Staff Departure - November 26, 2007

IT Software Process Coordinator Greg Coelho has resigned from the CTC IT Division.  Greg started as an IT Programmer/Analyst in November 2005 and was hired as the IT Software Process Coordinator this past September.  Before joining IT, Greg worked for Student Services as the Coordinator of Electronic Records.  Greg has accepted a position at Texas Women’s University in Denton.  We wish Greg the best.

Safely Removing Flash Drives Tech Tip - October 3, 2007

Flash drives, also known as thumb drives and pen drives, are replacing CD ROMs, 3.5-inch disks, and zip disks as the most common personal storage media.  Flash drives are small, lightweight removable data storage devices that easily plug into the USB port on your computer.  These drives are so convenient that it is easy to pull it from the USB port and go about your business before your data has actually finished saving to the drive.  To ensure information has been successfully loaded to the flash drive, click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon located in the system tray before removing the flash drive. Did You Know ... Denial of Service Attacks - September 30, 2007

The IT Division has posted new "Did You Know..." about Denial of Service attacks. A denial of service (DoS) attack is an attempt to prevent legitimate users from accessing a computer or network by bombarding the target with so many requests that the system stops responding. Read more ...

New and Updated Forms - posted September 5, 2007

The IT Division has added the Software Request Form to the IT Forms page. We also have changed the format of the Request for Equipment Move and Request for Equipment Procurement forms to HTML for easier submittal. Click here to visit the IT Forms Page.

Software Acquisition Guidelines - posted September 5, 2007

The IT Division has posted the IT Software Acquisition Guidelines. The purpose of this guideline is to establish the guidelines governing software acquisition, support, and use at Central Texas College and to document the standard software suite provided by the IT Division as listed in Addendum A. IT Service Announcement - posted August 21, 2007

Announcement:  Beginning August 27, 2007, the IT Division will have new telephone numbers.

Reason:  Central Texas College leases blocks of telephone number from EMBARQ.  The block of numbers CTC currently leases begin with the 526 prefix.  As the College continues to add additional phones, the availability of these 526 numbers becomes limited.  In an effort to maintain a standard 526-xxxx telephone number for Central Texas College and to confine the 501 numbers in one area, the IT Division will change their phone numbers to the new 501-xxxx numbers as indicated below:

IT News - Increase in Spam in July 2007

Spam attacks and Virus threats on the rise.  Postini, CTC’s spam filtering service, released a threat advisory detailing spam attacks and virus threats for the months January 2007 – July 2007.  Read more...

IT Software Library - posted July 27, 2007

The CTC IT Division is currently in the process of creating a software media library as a central repository for software media, floppy disks, zip disks, CDs, DVDs, used throughout the College.  If you want to maintain original copies of your software in your department then we request you send us a copy for storage in case the original is lost.  Otherwise, please contact the IT Help Desk at 501-3103 to arrange for storage of your software media.

The IT Division has posted a PowerPoint presentation on Email Account Access and Postini Email Protection. This presentation covers spam and the Postini email protection system used by the College. New IT Software Process Coordinator - posted June 4, 2007

Greg Coelho is the new IT Software Process Coordinator for the IT Information Systems Department at the Central Texas College Information Technology Division.  Greg will be responsible for leading various projects, designing project specifications, assigning tasks to programmers, and assisting the Director of IT Information Systems.

New Staff - posted May 18, 2007

The CTC IT Division welcomes Marcos Monteiro as a programmer/analyst in the Information Systems Department.  Marcos earned a Master of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems from Tarleton State University, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Systems from Brigham Young University, and an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Computer Science from Central Texas College.  He is CCNA certified, a Microsoft Certified Professional, CompTA Security+ Certified, and is proficient in several computing languages including Visual Basic and C++.  Before joining the IT Division, Marcos worked as an IT consultant, a database assistant, a system analyst/programmer, a senior field technician, and a graduate assistant at Tarleton State University.

The CTC IT Division congratulates Michelle Williams and Donald Wright on their graduation from Central Texas College last Friday.  Michelle, an IT Help Desk Technician, earned her Associates of Applied Science Degree in Network Professional Specialization and Certificates of Completion in Electronics and Network Professional Specialization.  Donald, a Desktop Services Technician I, earned his Associates of Applied Science Degree in Network Professional Specialization and a Certificate of Completion in the same field.

New Staff - posted April 17, 2007

Donald Wright has joined the CTC IT Division as a Desktop Service Technician I. He is a graduate of Copperas Cove High School and will graduate from CTC in May 2007 with an Associate's Degree in Network Professional Specialization. Donald plans to take the CCNA exam in the near future.

Tech Tip Posted - posted March 26, 2007

Microsoft Outlook includes an option to set up an automated Out of Office reply.  Out of Office Reply messages let senders know that their email has been received and the receiver is currently unavailable.  The Out of Office Replies can be set up to automatically send a generic message to all senders or rules can be established to send specific messages to certain senders ... read more.

A PowerPoint presentation on CTC's customized reporting solution, SoLutions I Control (SLIC). This presentation is an introductory tutorial to teach users how to quickly and easily generate reports. Daylight Savings Time Check - posted March 8, 2007

Daylight Savings Time will take effect three weeks earlier than usual on March 11, 2007. There is some concern that computers will not be prepared for the upcoming change. The CTC IT Division has completed steps to insure that computers on the main campus are ready for the change. However, some computers on campus and some home computers may not have received the updates. Microsoft has provided a service that will check your computer to see if it is ready for Daylight Savings Time. If you are not sure if your computer is ready then click here to visit the Microsoft Web page.

New PowerPoint Presentations Posted - posted January 12, 2007

The IT Training and Education Coordinator has produced two new PowerPoint presentations for users. The Windows Basics presentations gives users an introduction to the Microsoft Windows environment. Topics include The Basics of Windows, The Desktop, Using the Recycle Bin, and Keyboard Shortcuts. The Telephone Services presentation instructs users how to use the Avaya telephone system. Topics include How to Request Telephone and Voice Mail Services, Telephone Operation Procedures, Using AUDIX©, and explanations about the different types of telephone models in use by CTC. New Tech Tip Posted - posted January 9, 2007

The CTC IT Division has posted a new Tech Tip on Creating Signature Blocks in MS Outlook. This Tech Tip provides steps for creating and automatically inserting a signature block in all emails. At a minimum, a signature block should contain your name, title, department, and phone number.
