November 13, 2015 - IT Service Advisory
Issue: A power outage affected IT systems located in building 107 (the Power Plant) for approximately 20 minutes this morning. This resulted in a campus-wide phone system outage and a network outage for the majority of Central Campus buildings. (Internet and web services remained up for those off-campus and for certain on-campus buildings.) Facilities does not anticipate further power issues to building 107, but there is a possibility of additional disruptions in service until the source of the electrical issue affecting buildings 118 and 150 is found.
November 3, 2015 - IT Service Advisory
Issue: The IT Division has been made aware of an anti-virus scam that is currently circulating the campus in two ways.
Users have reported fake pop-up alerts and telephone calls from individuals attempting to direct users to their website for further assistance.
If you receive a pop-up alert or phone call from someone who wants to scan your computer for viruses, please alert the IT Help Desk at extension 3103 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Do not call the number or go to the provided website.
If you receive an unsolicited phone call and the caller requests access to your computer, please hang up and initiate a call to the IT Help Desk yourself. This way you can be certain you’re speaking to a legitimate CTC employee.

This message further explains how Class 3 information can be safely transferred.
HR Policy 294 defines Class 3 information as private information that must be protected (e.g., social security numbers, credit card numbers, passwords, bank account information, student academic records, etc.) and mandates that this information be encrypted prior to transmission by CTC staff or faculty. No Class 3 information should ever be sent unencrypted via email.
Class 3 information should be encrypted and sent to a recipient as an e-mail attachment or transmitted through our CTC eForms site:
- The CTC eForms site at https://ctceforms.ctcd.edu requires authentication, and all sessions are encrypted by your browser. You can type Class 3 information into a form, or you can attach a document containing Class 3 information to the form. After sending the form to another employee of your choice, the selected employee is notified via email that they have a document to view on the eForms site. (A form to be used specifically for secure document sharing is currently in development. This form will enable employees to securely transmit files containing Class 3 information to other employees without having to share a password – an inconvenience required by encryption tools.) - To securely transmit a file containing Class 3 information via e-mail, the IT Division recommends that all CTC employees use Encryption Wizard, a publicly-available encryption tool provided by the US Federal Government. By selecting one encryption tool to serve as the standard, we can ensure its proper use and avoid the confusion that comes with maintaining multiple, incompatible encryption tools. The tool and instructions can be downloaded here: http://www.spi.dod.mil/docs/EWizard-Public-3.4.4.zip. Encrypted documents will have a .wzd extension and must be decrypted using the same password used in the encryption process.
For those of you who are located on the Central Campus, Encryption Wizard and the accompanying user manual will be pushed to your desktop later in the week.
