The Central Texas College (CTC) Speech Team won the Community College Division in the recent Oklahoma Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament hosted by the University Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. Ten members of the CTC team participated in more than 30 speech events ranging from dramatic monologue to persuasive speaking and defeated 17 other two-year schools for the championship. Overall CTC finished second behind the University of Oklahoma.
Individually, sophomore Devyn Carter was named the second-best overall speaker in the tournament. He also finished fifth in the debate competition. Sophomore Robert Borntrager took third in debate and fourth in impromptu speaking from a field of more than 100 competitors. Classmate Catt Victory placed fourth in dramatic monologue and third in after-dinner speaking. Freshman Kayla Robertson-Jones placed second in dramatic monologue and fourth in poetry. In communication analysis, freshman Zack Wahlgren placed second and teammate Briana Esquierdo was third. Freshman Elena Romero placed fifth overall in debate speaker honors while bringing home sixth place in foreign extemporaneous speaking.
The CTC Speech Team continues its’ season this weekend at Tarleton State University to compete in the Texas Cup. This tournament is reserved for the top four teams from schools in Texas and will feature an online broadcast of the debate competition on the Tarleton State University website. The team of Romero and Borntrager will compete against the top debate teams from Tarleton, Texas Christian University, Baylor and the University of Texas.
