Central Texas College (CTC) will host the Region IV Intercollegiate Flight Association Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) competition the week of October 29 – November 2. More than 100 student pilots from five colleges and technical schools will descend on Skylark Field in Killeen to compete in a series of ground and flight events. Competing schools are CTC, Delta State University (Mississippi), Louisiana Tech University, LeTourneau University (Longview, TX) and Texas State Technical College (Waco, TX).

Teams will begin with practice landing runs on the first and second day of the competition. Also on the second day, teams will begin the aircraft recognition event and hold simulator practice. Next, the navigation staging and computer accuracy events will be held. Then teams will compete in the power off landing, power on landing and the simulated comprehensive aircraft navigation events. The competition portion concludes with the message drop staging, pre-flight aircraft inspection and simulator events. An awards ceremony will then be held to announce the top three schools which will move on to the national competition to be held in May 2019.

CTC hosted the regional competition in 2016 where it took second place overall by finishing first in the flight events and third place in the ground events. CTC Flight Team co-captains Brandon O’Neil and Luke Metheney were named the top two pilots respectively in the competition. CTC took third place at the regional event last year as it earned third place in the flight events and fourth in the ground events. At the national competition held in Terre Haute, IN, CTC was named the top-two year school in the competition. CTC also won the national SAFECON championship for two-year schools in 2014.
