Calling all actors

The Fine Arts Department will hold auditions for its springacting production of “Fences” January 20-21 in the Fine Arts auditorium (Bldg. 112). Auditions will be conducted from 4 – 6 p.m. both days. The production is scheduled for March 11-13. Anyone interested in auditioning should prepare a one-minute monologue of their choice which highlights your acting strengths and be prepared to “cold” read scenes from the play. [read more]



Recycle Life

CTC and the American Red Cross will conduct a Recycle Life blood drive on campus January 20. The Red Cross blood mobile will be parked near the Student Center (Bldg. 106) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-in donors are always welcome, however, you can set up an appointment time to donate blood by calling the Student Life office at 254-526-1258.

Blood drive

Guest artist performance

The spring semester Guest Artist Performance presented by the Fine Arts Department will feature harpist Gretchen Williams on Thursday, February 4. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts auditorium (Bldg. 112). Williams has played with the All-State Harp Ensemble, the TCU orchestra, the Texas Tech Ensemble, the Temple Symphony Orchestra, the Temple College Orchestra, the Temple Civic Theatre, the Temple Girls’ Choir, the Temple High School Orchestra, the Killeen and Ellison High School Choirs, the Ellison High School Band and the Austin Harp Ensemble. Tickets for the performance are only $5 for adults and children 13 and older. Free child care will be provided during the performance. Proceeds will benefit the Fine Arts music scholarship fund. Black History Month celebrationBlack History Month

CTC will host a Black History Month program on Tuesday, February 2 in the Fine Arts auditorium (Bldg. 112). Entitled “Stepping and Singing Praises of Joy: the African-American Experience,” the program will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. and will feature a variety of performances from community groups. Transfer Center offers campus tours and recruiter visits

The CTC Transfer Center will host several tours of four-year universities around Texas in the near future. The campus tour schedule includes: University of North Texas Denton, TX Friday, January 22 Tarleton State University Stephenville, TX Friday, March 5 University of Houston Houston, TX Friday, April 2 To participate in a campus tour, sign up at the Transfer Center in Bldg. 119 or e-mail ambassadors@ctcd.edu. You can also call 254-526-1667 for departure times. The Transfer Center will also host a representative form the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) for several recruiter visits. You can meet the UTA rep to discuss transferring credits, degree plans, financial aid and the admissions process to UTA. Scheduled recruiter visits from UTA will be held in the Student Center (Bldg. 106) on Thursday, February 11 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Thursday, February 25 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.; Monday, March 8 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.; and Wednesday, April 7 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. For more information on these and other upcoming recruiter visits, please call 254-526-1667.

Scholarships

Academic Explorer (AeX) is donating a $1,000 scholarship for an active duty or retired Marine Corps service member or immediate family member. Applicants must be an active duty or retired Marine Corps service member or immediate family member and currently enrolled in Central Texas College (includes distance learning. Applicants must also complete an electronic FAFSA, have a cumulative 2.5 CTC grade point average and maintain acceptable academic progress at CTC. For more information on the FAFSA, visit the CTC financial aid website and to apply for the scholarship, use the following link: http://www.mcsfex.net/. The application deadline is March 1.

Weather hotline/emergency alert systemEmergency Alert

During the winter months, the chances for inclement weather increases. In case of bad weather conditions such as ice or sleet, you can call the CTC Weather Hotline to see if the campus is open or closed. The hotline number is 254-501-3100.
You can also subscribe to CTC’s free emergency alert system which will send you either an e-mail, voice or text message regarding the campus status. To subscribe, go to Web Advisor and click on the emergency alert icon. The subscription is valid for one school year.

Mentors wanted

MentorsCTC is looking for students interested in serving as college mentors at area high schools to assist students with various aspects about attending college. Each mentor will work directly with students in either Copperas Cove, Killeen, Harker Heights, Shoemaker, Ellison, Lampasas, Gatesville or Marble Falls high school for a minimum of 15 hours per week with an additional five hours per week devoted to training, coordination and external events. Some of the job requirements include having a high school diploma or GED; six semester hours completed with a 2.0 GPA or higher; concurrent enrollment at CTC or Texas A&M-Central Texas while employed at CTC; possess the ability to communicate with written and oral expertise in the English language; basic computer skills; must be articulate; and must be able to write and generate reports.
As a college mentor, your duties would include working directly with counselors and/or AVID program directors at the assigned high school to coordinate information sessions on financial aid, scholarships and the college application process; working one-on-one with students and by request for classroom teachers in the assigned high school; providing administrative support and coordination for CTC Fast Track and Dual Credit programs; making presentations to groups of students related to the college search and financial aid processes; and participating in training related to job duties.

CTC ranked number one among service member tuition assistance students and enrollments

Central Texas College was recently ranked the number one undergraduate school for the number of students attending and number of enrollments/course among service members using the Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education Tuition Assistance program. The rankings were recently released by the DoD Continuing Education Programs.


CTC was first with 31,733 students and 69,701 enrollments. The University of Maryland University College was second in the number of students with 26,764 and third in enrollments with 59,722. American Military University was second in enrollments with 65,866 and third in number of students with 23,408. [read more]

CTC Continuing Education offers online courses and new “green” initiative

The CTC Continuing Education Department has partnered with ed2go to offer hundreds of high-quality online classes. Through well-crafted lessons, expert online instruction and interaction with fellow students, participants in these courses gain valuable knowledge at their convenience. Students have the flexibility to study at their own pace combined with enough structure and support to complete the course and they can access the classroom 24/7 from anywhere with an Internet connection. CTC among fastest growing two-year colleges in the country

Community College Week publication recently published its list of the fastest-growing community colleges. Central Texas College ranks 13th in the nation among the top 50 two-year schools with enrollments of 10,000 or higher. CTC enrollment rose 13.8 percent from 21,532 in 2007 to 24,498 in 2008 – an increase of 2,966.


According to Community College Week, college attendance has been increasing during the past 30 years but the significant trend is the rise of community college enrollments among younger students 18-24 years of age. Last year, nearly 12 percent or 3.4 million people in that age group were enrolled in two-year colleges. This is an increase of 10.9 percent from the year before. [read more]

CTC rated safest campus in Texas; fourth in nation

According to a recent study completed by StateUniversity.com, Central Texas College (CTC) was cited as the safest college campus in Texas and the fourth safest in the nation. The ranking is based on campus crime statistics accounting for the severity and frequency of crime. The statistics are based per 1,000 students.


StateUniversity.com compared crime statistics for more than 450 colleges and universities nationwide, and assigned each school a safety score based on frequency and severity of crime reported. CTC earned a safety rating of 99.2. Ahead of CTC was Arkansas State University-Beebe with a perfect 100 rating, Virginia Western Community College – 99.4 and Northeast State Technical Community College (Tennessee) also with a 99.2 rating. In fifth place nationwide was Cuesta College (California) – 99.1. [read more]

CTC opens new Fort Hood classrooms

Fort Hood ClassroomsAlmost one year to the day of the initial groundbreaking, CTC cut the ceremonial ribbon to commemorate the completion of its new educational facility on Fort Hood. Located next to its current Fort Hood campus on the corner of 72nd Street and Battalion Avenue, the new $4.25 million building will serve as classroom, office and lab space accommodating more than 800 students. It will officially open for classes on Monday, January 25. The new building will be a two-story structure with a combined 26,659 square feet. The first floor consists of 13,744 square feet and will house nine classrooms, four multi-use computer labs and one office. The second story will be 12,885 square feet containing 12 classrooms.


The new building will compliment the administrative building already in place that houses student services, registration, the business office and other administrative offices. It will be used to support education and training of active duty military personnel, dependents and civilians. Courses offered at the new facility include college courses, workforce training, adult education in ESL and GED preparation, continuing education and varied types of military-related training programs.
