VOCATIONAL NURSING APPLICANTS PLEASE NOTE

In addition to obtaining an adequate score on the Nurse Entrance Test (NET) you must pass the ACT ASSET test or the THEA test before enrollment in any vocational nursing program with more than 42 credit hours or qualify for an exemption. If you think that you might qualify for an exemption call the counseling department on main campus. The phone number is 1-800-792-3348, Extension 1851. .

The time-line for the admission process, for the Brady extension, will remain in place for the NET test but you will have until early August to complete the ASSET test requirements. Once you have completed the NET process begin working on the ASSET test. Having both completed by late May is preferable.

The ASSET test is given each week at the Testing Center on main campus. You can now take the ASSET test multiple times. You can repeat a section of the ASSET test until you get the necessary score. The only reason to take the THEA instead of the ASSET, for admission to this program, would be personal preference. You may use other sites for the ASSET test, as you desire.

The ASSET test does not require advance registration. The cost is $20.00 (payable at the CTC Business Office, Bldg. 119) and it is administered at 7:45 AM and 4:45 PM every Wednesday in Bldg. 119 Room 220. You can get further information by calling the main campus Testing Center at 1-800-792-3348 Ext 1254. Photo ID is required. For the math, a five-function, nonprogrammable calculator with square root and percent keys may be used; no scientific calculator.

An additional option is to take the Acuplacer Test. This test is given in Brownwood at TSTC. You will need to call 325 643-5987 and set up an appointment with their staff if you want to use this option. Tests are given Monday through Thursday but seating is limited.

To increase the probability of being successful with the ASSET test (or Nurse Entrance Test) you should use the Skills Center in Bldg. 118, Room 14 on main campus. Check main campus map. The Skills Center is open on a walk-in basis Monday thru Thursday 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM. and Friday 7:30 AM till 11:30 AM. There is no cost for the service which can help you identify potential areas of weakness and set up a plan of study to learn the required material. You do not need to have any current CTC status, anyone can go in and receive assistance. CTC also has links to sites with possible math and reading assistance. http://online.ctcd.edu/ Click on tutorials.

There are "local" sources of free assistance in addition the opportunity to use the Skills Center on main campus. The site in Brady which is available is through the Workforce Development Center. You need to call and set up an appointment with Becky Long. The phone number is 597-7676 & the office is located at 112 East 2nd Street in Brady. Her availability will be during the day on an appointment only basis. She has a pre-test (free) & study book, for the NET (Nurse Entrance Test) that you could review.

The Adult Literacy Council in San Angelo has computerized math and reading comprehension assistance. An individual assessment is done and a study program is set up for each client. You can come and go as their hours permit (8:00 AM-5:00 PM Monday thru Thursday, 6:00 PM-9:00 PM Monday & Wednesday, 8:00 AM-12:00 PM Friday). The address is 59 East 6th Street, San Angelo, TX 76903, phone # 325-657-0013.

There is a website which allows you to print out a study guide for the ASSET test, the site is http://www.act.org/asset/pdf/guide.pdf

Another option is to seek assistance through your local high school guidance counselor. There may be THEA review classes available that are convenient for you. Additionally you could use internet resources through your local public library.

Your admission into the program will be dependent on your NET test scores and successful completion of the ASSET test or the THEA test.
