Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Exemptions

A student is exempt from all TSI requirements under any one of the following conditions.

  • Graduated college with an associates or bachelor's degree. Submit transcript to TSI@ctcd.edu for review.
  • Have earned a C or higher in a college-level courses in reading, writing and/or math at an accredited institution.  The course(s) must be equivalent to CTC course(s) on the C or Better Transfer Course list.  Submit transcript to TSI@ctcd.edu for review.
  • Previously attended any institution and has been determined to have met readiness standards by that institution. Submit transcript to TSI@ctcd.edu for review.
    • For students meeting non-Algebra intensive readiness standards in mathematics CTC requires additional preparatory coursework/interventions for Algebra intensive courses, including MATH 1314/1324/1414.
  • On or after August 1, 1990, was honorably discharged, retired or released from active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States or the Texas National Guard or service as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States. Submit Member-4 DD214 to TSI@ctcd.edu for review.

A student is exempt from one or more TSI requirements under the following conditions. SAT, ACT, TAKS and STAAR scores used to support an exemption must be less than five years old.

  • A student with a SAT score of at least 1070 (administered prior to March 5, 2016) and a math score of at least 500 is exempt from the math TSI Assessment
  • A student with a SAT score of at least 1070 (administered prior to March 5, 2016) and a critical reading score of at least 500 is exempt from the reading and writing requirements TSI Assessment
  • A student with a SAT administered on or after March 5, 2016 with a minimum score of 530 on mathematics is exempt from the mathematics section of the TSI Assessment
  • A student with a SAT administered on or after March 5, 2016 with a minimum score of 480 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) exempt from both reading and writing sections of the TSI Assessment
  • A student with an ACT composite score of at least 23 and a math score of at least 19 is exempt from the math TSI Assessment
  • A student with an ACT composite score of at least 23 and an English score of at least 19 is exempt from the reading and writing TSI Assessment
  • A student with an exit-level TAKS math score of at least 2200 is exempt from the math TSI Assessment
  • A student with an exit-level TAKS English/language arts score of at least 2200 and an essay score of at least 3 is exempt from the reading and writing TSI Assessment
  • A student with a score of at least Level 2 score of 4000 on the STAAR English III end-of-course (EOC) is exempt from the reading and writing TSI Assessment
  • A student with a score of at least Level 2 score of 4000 on the STAAR Algebra II end-of-course (EOC) is exempt from the math TSI Assessment

With a comprehensive exemption, a student qualifies for the following entry level college courses:  ENGL 1301, MATH 1314/1324/1332/1342, and BIOL 1406. If you have an exemption and are having trouble registering for these courses, please email registration.help@ctcd.edu.

 

Waivers

A student is waived from all TSI requirements under any one of the following conditions.

  • A non-degree-seeking or a non-certificate-seeking student
  • Seeking credit to transfer to another institution (transient)
  • Seeking a level 1 certificate (42 or fewer credit hours)
  • Serving on active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States and have been serving for at least three years preceding enrollment.
