Upon completion of the Histology Technician (HT) program, students are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) HT Board of Registry exam. Once a student successfully passes the ASCP BOR exam, they will be nationally certified as a histotechnician.

If a student has a Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree, they will be eligible to sit for the ASCP Histotechnologist (HTL) Board of Registry exam upon completion of the HT program. Once a student successfully pass the ASCP HTL exam, they will be nationally certified as a histotechnologist.

For more information on the ASCP BOR exam, go to https://www.ascp.org/content/board-of-certification/get-credentialed#us-certifications.

The State of Texas does not require state licensure for histotechnicians/histotechnologists. Some states require that HTs be licensed in their state to be employed as an HT. For information about state licensure outside the state of Texas, please refer to the resources offered by each state regarding their requirements.
