Students can come to the Academic Studio and sign in, then they are guided to a designated computer where they can independently work through their benefits case(s) or application(s). All questions about their specific case will be directed to Texas Health and Human Services as CTC does not award or deny benefits, nor do we know the specifics of someone’s case.
People can apply for new benefits, check the status of their benefits, and renew benefits. Applications include:
- SNAP Food Benefits (assists families in buying food).
- TANF Cash Help (assists families with children 18 and younger by helping cover costs of basic needs).
- Health Care (helps cover doctor, dentist, and hospital visits in addition to medication ordered by dentists and doctors).
- Support Services (assistance with daily living needs, caregivers, and people with mental health and drug or alcohol issues).
- WIC Food Benefits (assists pregnant and breastfeeding women and/or families with children under 5 years old pay for food).
To better assist students, the Academic Studio has gathered on and off campus resource information.

Retention alerts are an intervention tool developed to help your academic success.
Retention alerts are automatic communications that gather information and allow faculty to reach out and support students in need of assistance during the first three weeks of class and at the midpoint of the semester. The retention alerts happen early to decrease student struggles and give students a chance to get help, use resources, and stay on the path to success.
The Retention Alert Types:
- Lack of Participation
- Excessive Absence Behavior/Personal Concerns
- Missing Work
- Cannot Pass with Remaining Course Work
- Poor Quality Work
- Excessive Tardiness
- Low Test Scores
- Unsatisfactory Progress
- Tutoring Needed
How to Respond If You Receive a Retention Alert:
- Figure out what class your retention alert is for and what type of alert it is.
- Check in with your professor and follow their recommendations for success in your retention alert email.
- Go through your course syllabus and understand your professor’s policies for class.
- For attendance alerts: Contact your professor to discuss what attendance issues are hurting your success in class. Consider emailing, scheduling an appointment, or visiting your professor during their office hours. If you know you are going to be late/absent from class or you need specific accommodations, email or call your professor.
- Make sure you know when assignments are due and make sure you turn them in on time.
- If you are not sure about the alert or have questions: Contact your professor to discuss what is hurting your success in class.
