A beneficiary can be an individual, an institution, a trust or your estate. Beneficiaries can also be the children of the beneficiaries you list. You can choose primary beneficiaries and contingent beneficiaries. Your primary beneficiaries receive benefits when you die. If no primary beneficiary is living, the benefits become payable to your contingent beneficiaries. If none of the beneficiaries are living at the time of your death, the benefits go to your estate.
Beneficiary designation can be done online or by contacting TIAA-CREF.
ONLINE ACCESS: Upon enrollment into your pension plan, TIAA-CREF Retirement Services (our new record keeper) mails the "TIAA-CREF Enrollment Confirmation" packet that includes your account number which is required to register online. TIAA-CREF requests all QPP and SPP plan members log into their account at www1.tiaa-cref.org/tcm/ctcd to update their beneficiary designation. Completing the form online is quick and convenient and often processes faster than paper forms. If you do not designate a beneficiary, the account is defaulted to your estate. Once logged in, click on Profile & Settings, then click Beneficiaries.
