The Central Texas College (CTC) Fine Arts department announced the opening of a new art exhibit featuring the acrylic paintings of Austin, TX artist Ryan Runcie. The exhibit, “Have You Been Seen Today,” opens September 17 and will run through November 18 in the upstairs art gallery of the campus library.
A studio artist, muralist and painting instructor in Austin, Runcie’s paintings are in private collections and large scale public murals across central Texas. He has been commissioned to create murals and various installations for the city of San Marcos, Ebay, Capital Metro in Austin, the George W. Carver Museum, DCS Corporation, Strong Events, Blackshear Bridge/Blackshear Elementary, Capitol View Arts, Penny Lane Bar and Pnuema Art Studios in Austin.
Runcie describes “Have You Been Seen Today” as a collection of abstracted paintings that look back at you with their own sense of concerns and emotional qualities. “The theme embraces the fact we have many similarities with each other, yet our differences are what make us rich and inspiring,” he said. “I use color in my artwork to push away ethnicity and race so you can see the true person as they are. My portraits revolve around my intention for social and racial reconciliation. To move past a mere tolerance of others, we must cultivate a higher sense of empathy for other cultures. A healthy self-love allows us to see others and understand we can be different and still exist together.”
A constant traveler, Runcie uses those travel experiences for the creation and engagement of art. He has been to multiple Caribbean islands and France studying their cultures and the relationship to their art in order to better relate his work globally. “I find no matter what topics I venture to in my work, my foundation is always a posture of seeking to understand,” said Runcie. “It is my hope I may play a role, no matter how humble, in beginning a cultural shift in how we view ourselves and each other.”
Runcie will discuss his paintings during a meet-the-artist reception on Thursday, September 19 in the CTC library art gallery from 4 to 5 p.m. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. “Have You Been Seen Today” is available during normal CTC library business hours of 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday; and 12:30 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
